What is ERCP?

ERCP is a procedure that combines upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and x-rays to treat problems of the bile and pancreatic ducts. ERCP stands out for Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. Dr. Vikrant Kale uses a flexible lighted tube called an “endoscope.” The endoscope, or scope, is about as thick as your index finger.

It goes through your mouth into your stomach and the first part of the small intestine called the “duodenum.” Then the doctor puts a very small, flexible plastic tube through the scope and injects some dye that shows up on X-rays. This procedure allows a doctor to see the ducts and how well they are working.

Why is ERCP done?

Dr. Vikrant Kale has done ERCP to find and treat problems in the pancreatic duct and bile duct. The most common reasons for ERCP include:

  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), light stool, and dark urine
  • Stones in the bile or pancreas duct
  • A lesion or tumor in the pancreas, gallbladder, or live

Dr. Vikrant Kale might do ERCP before or after gallbladder surgery in specific situations. For example, they can find and remove gallstones from the bile duct and sometimes from the pancreas. ERCP can also help find cancer or non-cancerous lesions. If your bile duct is blocked, your doctor can use ERCP to put in a small plastic tube called a “stent”. This keeps the duct open and digestive juices flowing. Finally, ERCP can help find and treat problems following gallbladder surgery.

How Dr. Vikrant Kale Performs ERCP:

ERCP is usually an inpatient procedure and done on patients who are admitted with blockage of their biliary ducts or pancreatic ducts. You’ll be given sedation through your veins.

During a diagnostic ERCP, Dr. Vikrant Kale:

  • Numbs your throat with an anesthetic spray.
  • Inserts the endoscope into your mouth and guides it through the esophagus and stomach to reach the upper part of the small intestine (duodenum).
  • Pumps air through the endoscope into the stomach and duodenum to make it easier to see organs.
  • Slides a different tube, called a catheter, into the endoscope until it reaches the bile and pancreatic ducts.
  • Injects a special dye through the catheter.
  • Takes video gastrointestinal X-rays (fluoroscopy) as the dye travels through the ducts.
  • Checks for signs of blockage or problems.

What should I expect after ERCP?

The endoscopic procedure may irritate your throat. You might need to eat soft foods for a day or two until the soreness subsides.

After ERCP, you may experience some bloating (a swollen feeling from the pumped-in air) and nausea (an anesthesia side effect). You should be able to return to work and normal activities the next day, with your doctor’s approval.
